 Interview réalisée par mail avec DMN, le guitariste.
Tout auréolé d'une tournée européenne en première partie de Pro Pain, DEMIA emprunte déjà la voix royale. A l'écoute d'"Insidious", on se rend vite compte que les Hollandais ne vont bientôt plus avoir besoin de jouer les "seconds couteaux" en tournée. Scarlet Records ne s'y est pas trompé et a signé dès le premier album un groupe en devenir... 1. Comme nous ne connaissons pas vraiment Demia, pourrais-tu nous présenter le groupe ?
Le groupe s’est formé voilà sept ans à Amsterdam. Spit, Sky et moi avons commencé à jouer ensemble après avoir quitté nos anciens bands. Nous avons eu un super feeling et avons donc décidé de former un groupe. Nous avons alors cherché un chanteur et un second guitariste, et peu de temps après, Yoav et Robert se sont joints à nous pour former Demia.
2. Qui a eu l’idée de nommer le groupe Demia et quelle est sa signification ?
Nous avons l’habitude d’être appelé « Cancelled ». Mais lorsque nous avons joué de plus en plus d’autres pays, spécialement en Angleterre et aux Etats-Unis, les problèmes manifestes avec le nom de notre groupe sont devenus vraiment sérieux et nous avons alors décidé de changer de nom. Nous avons eu plusieurs idées mais la plupart étaient trop profond ou trop cool ou encore trop dur, aucun d’eux ne nous marquèrent vraiment. Après un certain temps, Yoav trouva DEMIA et nous avons commencé à jouer avec ce nom. Cela ne veut pas dire grand-chose, tu ne le trouveras d’ailleurs pas dans un dictionnaire, mais il dégage plusieurs émotions que tous les membres apprécient vraiment. Pour moi, cela ressemble au nom d’un démon femelle. Quelque chose de beau et tentant, mais qui peut aussi tout déchirer en lambeau.
3. Peux tu m’en dire un peu plus à propos de ton background et de celui des autres membres ?
J’ai commencé à jouer de la guitare à onze ans et ait tout appris seul. Après de nombreux voyages autour du rock, metal, grindcore et death metal, j’ai définitivement su que ce genre de musique possédait l’énergie que je voulais délivrer. J’ai joué de la guitare dans un groupe de metal instrumental avec des chansons longues de 9 mn, dans un groupe de hip-hop hardcore crossover metal avec deux rappeurs et un DJ, et j’ai terminé dans cet excellent groupe de musiciens du nom de DEMIA. La plupart des autres musiciens ont un chemin musical semblable au mien avec pour certains plus de death metal et pour d’autres plus de rock.
4. Vous venez de Hollande. Est-ce que la compétition a été dure au commencement du groupe ?
La compétition n’est pas si dure chez nous. Comprends moi bien, il y a beaucoup de très bons groupes de metal en Hollande, mais il n’y a pas vraiment de challenge dans la mesure où la plupart sont amis. Mais nous avons l’avantage que nos formations s’entendent très bien sur la scène. Donc lorsque nous créons un nouveau groupe, nous avons de suite l’appui des médias, et un show d’ouverture avec la venue de 1500 personnes environ.
5. Comment êtes-vous parvenus à décrocher une signature avec votre label ?
Après avoir baigné dans le business du metal durant quelques temps, nous avons décidé de ne pas compromettre notre intégrité artistique. Je veux dire que nous n’aurions pas changé de style musical pour cela. Donc au lieu d’enregistrer une autre démo et négocier l’enregistrement d’un album avec un label, nous sommes allés de l’avant en enregistrant nous-mêmes notre propre album. Comme cela, nous avons pu choisir un label en présentant un produit fini que nous soutenions à 100%.
6. Combien de labels vous ont porté de l’intérêt ?
Il y en a eu beaucoup, mais peu nous ont réellement suivi. Et lorsque c’était le cas, ils arrivaient avec des propositions ridicules et souhaitaient avoir tous les droits sur nos enregistrements sans contrepartie pour nous. Et bien sûr, nous avons refusé. Nous nous sommes investis pour cet album et ce n’est pas pour le voir partir gratuitement. Scarlet nous a fait une offre décente et avons accepté.
7. Comme vous avez écrit toutes les paroles de toutes vos chansons, pouvez-vous nous donner quelques commentaires sur les meilleures d’entres elles ?
En fait, je n’ai pas écrit ces chansons…on doit cela à notre chanteur. Je peux seulement te dire que ce n’est pas simple de lire les paroles dans le booklet car ce n’est pas un vocabulaire moyen fait de rimes creuses. Yoav est un écrivain et un poète avant d’être un chanteur, et cela se sent dans les paroles. Tu ne dois pas trouver les chansons très faciles à comprendre mais il y a plusieurs niveaux d’interprétations qui en fait une pièce d’art très intrigante.
8. Comment vous sentez-vous après avoir terminé l’enregistrement de ces chansons ?
Nous reposons nos esprits créatifs et maintenant, nous regardons nos bébés grandir. Nous sommes des parents extrêmement fiers.
9. Dis-moi un peu ce que l’on a pensé de votre album?
Cela diffère beaucoup. Je pense que nous avons fait un album pas évident à écouter, mais qui a besoin de grandir en vous. Nous avons obtenu de très bonnes chroniques. Ils ont dû écouter plusieurs fois afin de parfaitement s’imprégner de l’album. D’autres n’ont pas fait cela ou ont écouté qu’une partie des chansons et n’ont de ce fait pas apprécié. Il en a découlé de mauvaises chroniques. Nous de vons accepter cela. On n’a pas le contrôle de ce que les gens écrivent sur nous.
10. Pourquoi appelé votre opus “Insidious”?
« Insidious » signifie tout ce qui est tentant mais dangereux. Attrayant mais destructeur. Beau mais mortel. On retrouve ces thèmes tout au long de notre vie: l’amour, la drogue, le sexe, l’ambition, etc…C’est comme le yin et le yang. Sans le côté sombre des choses, on ne pourrait apprécier l’aspect lumineux. Tu dois connaître le laid afin d’être transporté par le beau. Et c’est ce que la musique de DEMIA représente. Ouverte mais impactante. Mélodique, mais brutale.
11. Comment voyez-vous le futur de DEMIA?
Sous les meilleurs auspices.
12. Autre chose que vous souhaiteriez dire ou ajouter ?
L’amour et le respect sont deux notions que l’on semble avoir oubliées de nos jours. Ne suivez pas la vague…Battez-vous contre la connerie.
ENGLISH VERSION 1) As we don't know anything about Demia, could you please tell us when and how the band was formed.
The band was formed about 7 years ago in Amsterdam. Spit, Sky and me started jamming together after we left our previous bands. We had such good chemistry that we just had to form a band. So we started looking for a singer and a second guitarist and soon after that Yoav and Robert joined and we had a full band.
2) Who came up with the band name Demia and what's the meaning behind it?
We used to be called CANCELLED. But when we started to play more and more in other countries, especially England an America, the obvious problems with our band name became pretty serious and we decided to change our name. We had a lot of different brainstorm sessions that mostly had names flying by that were deep or cool or strong or whatever, but none of em sparked a flame in everyone. After a while Yoav had DEMIA as part of a word or sentence, and when we started playing around with it, it became clear that we just wanted the single part: DEMIA. It doesn't really mean anything as in that you won't find it in a dictionary, but it has tons of interpretations an emotions with it that we all like very much. For me it resembles a female demon., Something beautifull and tempting, but when you get close you get ripped to shreds.
3) Can you tell us something more about your background and that of the other band members?
I started playing guitar at 11 and learned it all by myself. After numerous journeys through rock, metal, grindcore and deathmetal I definitely knew that this genre had the energy I wanted to communicate. I have been playing guitar in an instrumental metal band with 9 minute songs, in a hip-hop/hardcore crossover metal band with two rappers and a DJ and ended up in this excellen group of musicians called DEMIA. Most of the other guys have a similar path of musical evolution with some more deathmetal, and others more rock.
4) You guys hail from Holland. Was the competiton hard in the early days of the band?
The competition is not that hard in holland. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of very good metal bands in Holland, but there is no real 'competition' as in that almost everyone is friends.
But we had the advantage that our former bands had already done pretty ok in the scene. So when we started a new band, we immediately had media coverage and a very good gig opening for Kitty in a sold out 1500 people venue.
5) How did you try to get a record deal?
After being in this metal music business for quite a while, we already decided not to compromise on our own artistic integrity. Meaning we were not going to change what we do. So instead of recording another demo and negotiating an album recording with a label, we went ahead and recorded our own album on our own terms. So that way we would be shopping for labels with a finished product that we supported 100%.
6) How many record labels showed interest in the band?
There were a lot of labels interested, but not many followed through. And when they did they came with ridiculous terms and wanted to have the rights to our recordings for free. And we dont do that. We have paid for this on our own, and that is not something you want to give away for free. Scarlet made a decent offer, and we accepted.
7) As you have written the lyrics of all the songs, could you please give some comment on the best of them?
Actually, I have not written those lyrics... Our singer does that ;) I can only tell you that it definitely is worth the effort to read the lyrics in the booklet or online, because they're not the average bunch of hollow rhymes. Yoav is a writer and poet before he is a singer, and that is evident in the lyrics. You might not find every song as easy to understand, but they hold many levels of interpretation and make for a very intriguing piece of art.
8) How does it feel to see those songs finally released?
We have laid our creative eggs, and now we can watch our babies grow. We are extremely proud parents.
9) Tell me about the response you had so far about your album?
That differs a lot. I think we have made an album that is not the most easy listening around, but needs to grow on you. We have gotten a lot of excellent reviews from people who did just that. They listened more than once and got into the groove of things. Others may have not have had the time or will to do that and listened to parts of songs and if they didn't like it, it got a bad review. In the end you have got to just let that stuff slide. There is no way you can control what people write about you. Well.... not without a couple of million anyway ;)
10) Why did you call the album "Insidious"?
'Insidious' means all that is tempting, but dangerous. Inviting, but destructive. Beautiful, but deadly. Those themes are found all throughout life itself: Love, drugs, sex, ambition, etc. It's like yin and yang. Without the dark side of things, you can not appreciate the light side. You have to know ugly to be moved by the beautiful. And that's the music DEMIA represents. Open, but in your face. Melodic, but brutal.
11) How do you see the future for Demia?
It's gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day.
12) Anything you’d like to say or add?
Love and respect are two words seemingly forgotten in todays world. Don't just go with the flow...Fight fake crap.
