Interview réalisée par mail...

Un raz-de-marée viking metal s'est abattu sur le paysage metal mondial. Descendus tout droit de leur drakkar, les Danois de Svartsot vont dégommer sec à coup de chant death qui leur permet d'être originaux. Napalm Records possède lui aussi son viking band qui est prêt à conquérir les continents!

1) Peux tu nous parler de ton groupe?

Svartsot a commence au début de l’année 2005. La plupart des membres originaux avait déjà joué ensemble dans un groupe de folk metal influencé black, pendant environ 6 mois. Le line-up original de Svartsot était le classique “guitare-basse-vocaux-batterie”, mais dès le premier show, nous avons pensé qu’il y avait un manque. On a décidé d’embaucher un joueur de pipeau dans le groupe, pour donner un son plus complet et plus folk.

Cela a vraiment bien fonctionné, et après un autre petit changement de line-up, nous avons enregistré notre première demo, "Svundne Tider", à l’automne 2005. Cette démo s’est pas mal vendue, et nous a valu une place dans une compétition nationale de groupes de métal underground, appelée Danish Metal Grand Prix, en 2006. Nous avons remporté cette compétition, et cela a aidé à notre popularité ici au Danemark.

La demo suivante, "Tvende Ravne", a été enregistrée à la fin de l’été 2006. Le groupe a subi à nouveau un changement mineur de line-up juste après la parution de la démo au début de l’année 2007. Cet enregistrement a été lui aussi bien accueilli, et nous a fait remarquer par Napalm Records début 2007. Le label nous a trouvé sur Internet, et ils ont aimé ce qu’ils ont entendu. Le premier album, "Ravneses Saga", a été enregistré à l’été 2007.

2) Est-ce que le groupe se réunit pour parler des thèmes des futures chansons avant l'écriture de celles-ci?

Non pas vraiment. J’écris la plupart des musiques et paroles, même si notre autre guitariste, Michael, a également contribué à l’ensemble. Parfois nous écrivons ensemble, et Stewart (instruments soufflés) et moi avons également travaillés ensemble à un titre. Svartsot a quelques éléments stylistiques auxquels nous avons tendance à rester fidèles, et les thèmes des paroles sont prévus à l’avance, quelque part. Nous basons quasiment toutes les paroles sur le folklore et la mythologie nordique, donc, il s’agit de trouver une histoire qui va coller avec la musique. La musique est toujours écrite avant les paroles.

3) Qui a produit votre nouvel album?

L’album a été produit et mixé par Jacob Hansen, qui a travaillé avec f.x. Tyr et Hatesphere.

4) Vous êtes signés chez Napalm Records, êtes-vous optimistes pour l'avenir?

Oui, nous le sommes assez. Napalm a vraiment fait du bon boulot pour la promotion de l’album jusqu’ici, donc maintenant, il nous reste à attendre ce que les fans de métal vont en penser.

5) Au Danemark, est ce que la censure de l'Eglise est importante pour un groupe aux croyances pagan?

Contrairement à d’autres pays en Scandinavie, les gens ne sont pas si chrétiens que ça au Danemark. Bon, la plupart des gens se font baptiser et confirmer à l’église, mais il s’agit plus d’une tradition que par conviction. L’église n’a pas grand-chose à dire. Il y avait même un prêtre ici qui ne croyait pas en Dieu, donc, ça ressemble vraiment à de la farce. Asatro, ou la foi envers les dieux anciens, est en fait une religion acceptée ici au Danemark. Alors la censure par la religion n’est pas un souci.

6) Est-ce que vous honorez la mémoire de vos ancêtres par le biais de cette musique?

Oui et non. Comme je t’ai dis, nous utilisons la mythologie et le folklore comme point d’ancrage pour les paroles, donc dans cette mesure, nous honorons l’héritage national. Mais nous ne sommes pas dans une espèce de trip de culte des ancêtres, dévoués à des gens morts ou ce genre de truc.

7) Pouvez-vous nous parler de la situation du metal dans votre pays?

Le metal semble faire un comeback au Danemark. Non pas qu’il ait déjà disparu, mais ça a été calme pendant quelques temps. Il y a beaucoup de groupes qui commencent à avoir une reconnaissance internationale, des groupes comme Hatesphere, Mercenary et Mnemic. Il y a également beaucoup de nouveaux groupes émergeant dans la scène, donc, le meilleur est à venir.

8) Folk Viking; ce style de musique est très populaire en 2007. Pensez-vous pouvoir vous faire une place dans cette jungle?

Oui, je le pense. Je n’ai pas entendu de groupe jouant le genre de folk metal que nous jouons. Si d’autres courants du métal peuvent survivre pendant 10/20 ans sans décliner ou se faire vieux, alors il y a un espoir pour le folk metal également.

9) La tournée en support de Korpiklaani a été annulée, pourquoi?

Bonne question. Nous ne savons pas pourquoi. Il nous tardait vraiment de faire cette tournée, mais on s’est fait lâcher, sans explications.

10) Quel style de musique écoutez-vous par plaisir?

Tout le monde dans le groupe écoute des choses différentes. La plupart d’entre nous écoutent du folk métal, mais Michael par exemple adore le thrash, notre batteur Niels aime les choses rythmiquement complexes. Claus écoute tous les genres de métal et de hardcore. Martin est très dans Opeth ; Stewart aime le heavy metal et la folk. J’écoute de tout, du progressif 70’s jusqu’au death et au black metal. J’écoute aussi beaucoup de musique folk.

11) La vie au Danemark doit être douce...Est-ce que la situation s'est dégradée ces dernières années?

Je ne pense pas que la vie soit douce nulle part, mais il fait plutôt bon vivre ici au Danemark, comparativement à d’autres endroits. Je ne pense pas que ce soit vraiment amené à changer.

1) Can you speak us about the history of Svartsot...?

Svartsot was started in the start of 2005. Most of the original line up had already played together in a more black metal based folk metal band for around a half a year before then.

Svartsot’s original line up was the typically metal guitar-guitar-bass-vocals-drums, but already after the first show we thought it sounded a little lacking. We decided to get a whistle player in the band, as it would give a more complete and more folky sound.

This worked really well, and (after another small line up change) we recorded our first demo, Svundne Tider, in the autumn of 2005. This demo sold quite well, and ensured us a place in a national underground metal band competition, called Danish Metal Grand Prix, in 2006. We won this competition, and this helped our popularity quite a lot here in Denmark.

The next demo, Tvende Ravne, was recorded in the late summer of 2006. The band went through another minor line up change just after the demo was released in early 2007. This recording was also quite popular, and was what got us noticed by Napalm Records early in 2007. The label found us on the internet, and liked what they heard. The debut album, Ravnenes Saga, was recorded in the summer of 2007.

2) Does the band as a whole come up with the topics and song themes before the lyrics are written?

No, not really. Much of the music and lyrics are written by me, although our other guitarist, Michael, has also written a lot of music and some lyrics. Sometimes we write together, and Stewart (whistles) and I have also worked together on a track. Svartsot has some stylistic elements which we tend to follow, so lyrical themes are kind of in place before hand. We base pretty much all of the lyrics on folklore and/or Nordic mythology, so it is a case of finding a story that fits the music. The music is always written before the lyrics.

3) Who produced your new album?

The album was produced and mixed by Jacob Hansen, who has worked with f.x. Týr and Hatesphere.

4) You were signed by Napalm Records; you are optimist for the future?

Yeah, we are quite optimistic about the future. Napalm have been doing a really good job of promoting the album so far, so we’ll just have to see what the metal fans will think of it.

5) In Denmark, are the censures of the church important for the band of pagan persuasion?

Unlike some of the other countries here in Scandinavia, people are not quite so Christian here in Denmark. Yeah, most people get baptised and confirmed in the church here, but it’s more out of tradition than conviction. The church doesn’t really have anything to say. There was even a priest here who didn’t believe in god, so it seems a bit of a farce. Asatro, or belief in the old gods, is actually an accepted religion here in Denmark. So censuring by the church is not an aspect.

Having said all this, Svartsot is not a religious band. We do not worship the old gods in any way. It is just a fitting subject for the lyrics. When you play folk metal, you have to have lyrics that fit the music. Our lyrics are really about beer, battles and bitches, just set in a mythological or folkloristic context. You could call it a way to protect our cultural heritage.

6) You honour the memory of yours ancestors when you play this music?

Yes and no. As I just wrote, we use the mythology and folklore as a setting for the lyrics, so in that respect we are honouring the national heritage. But we’re not like some kind of ancestor cult worshipping dead people or something.

7) Speak us of the situation of metal in your country...

Metal seems to making a comeback in Denmark. Not that it ever went away, but it was a little quiet for a while. There are many bands that are beginning to get international recognition, bands such as Hatesphere, Mercenary and Mnemic. There are also a lot of new acts appearing on the scene, so the future looks bright.

8) Folk Viking, this kind of music is block like a highway in 2007; you think Svartsot could take a place in this scene?

Yeah, I think so. I have not heard any bands that play the brand of folk metal that we do. If other styles of metal can survive for ten-twenty years without showing signs of being tired and old, then there is hope for folk metal as well.

9) The support tour with Korpiklaani was cancelled, why?

Good question. We don’t know why. We were really looking forward to it, but we got dropped, and there was no explanation.

10) What type of music do you listen to for pleasure?

Everyone in the band listens to different stuff. Most of us listen to folk metal, but Michael for example likes thrash a lot, our drummer Niels likes rhythmically complicated stuff. Claus listens to all kinds of metal and hardcore. Martin is quite into Opeth; Stewart likes heavy metal and folk. I listen to everything from 70’s prog to death metal and black metal. I also listen to a lot of folk music.

11) Denmark is a country where life is sweet. During these last years, does the situation become worse?

I don’t think life is sweet anywhere, but the situation is quite good here in Denmark compared to many places. I don’t think the situation will change so much.
