Rugby, surf et kangourou, voilà ce qu'évoque pour nous l'Australie! Mais savez-vous que ce pays recelle un bijou du heavy metal teinté de progressif? Malgré une discographie riche de quatre albums, les Aussies n'ont encore pas fait grand bruit dans notre pays. Raison de plus pour vous intéresser enfin à "The Fourth Season"... 1) Bonjour tout le monde. Félicitations pour votre nouvel album. Pouvez-vous nous éclairer un peu sur votre parcours. Merci beaucoup pour le compliment. J’apprécie beaucoup. Vanishing Point fut créé il y a plus de dix ans, sous le nom de EYE, et comprenait je crois Jack Lukic, Tommy Vucur, Joe Del Mastro et Simon Likic. Silvio Massaro a rejoint le groupe en 1995 et le groupe a enregistré Thought, originellement avec un autre guitariste du nom d’Andrew. J’ai rejoint le groupe en 1997 et en 1999, nous avons enregistré Tangled In Dream, nous avons tourné en Europe en 2001 avec Gamma Ray et Sonata Arctica, et avons joué l’année d’avant au Wacken. En 2005, nous avons sorti, via Dockyard 1, « Embrace The Silence », et nous avons tourné dans notre pays en première partie de Gamma Ray, de Nightwish, de Black Label Society, et de Dragonforce, ce qui a été vraiment très cool, et dans tout cela nous avons également joué nos propres shows ici en Australie, sans cependant avoir la chance de retourner en Europe depuis 2001, malheureusement.
Depuis, nous avons enregistré et sorti chez Dockyard 1 notre nouvel album, qui est notre quatrième et ironiquement intitulé « The Fourth Season ». Nous avons également deux nouveaux membres dans le groupe, Adrian Alimic à la basse, et Christian Nativo à la batterie, qui ont remplacé Jack Lukic et Joe Del Mastro.
2) Etes-vous satisfaits des retours de "The Fourth Season" ?
Oui, nous sommes heureux du petit retour que nous avons reçu jusqu’ici, même s’il est difficile d’entendre ce qui se dit, étant si loin ici en Australie, cependant nous sommes agréablement surpris de voir que tant de gens et de journalistes semblent apprécier notre musique, ainsi que notre dernier disque. Bien sûr, nous souhaitons tourner avec ce disque, donc nous allons voir comment les choses se présentent, quant à présent, c’est difficile à dire.
3) The Fourth Season" est un album de metal mélodique. Pensez-vous à l'avenir explorer d'autres styles musicaux ou allez-vous rester fidèles au même genre musical?
Je ne suis pas certain, nous avons toujours voulu nous considérer comme un groupe qui écrit de la musique qui lui plait, et nous avons tendance à aller artistiquement au gré de ce qui ressort naturellement, nous n’avons pas d’approche définie ou de plan préconçu par rapport à ce à quoi nos chansons ressembleront au final, et d’une certaine façon, cela maintient notre intérêt, nous n’écrivons pas des morceaux pour des nécessités contractuelles, et nous pensons pouvoir donner le meilleur de nous même lorsque nous ressentons mieux les morceaux, au lieu de jouer des morceaux et d’avoir l’impression de jouer des reprises !
Pour ce qui est de nos prochains albums, je peux sans doute envisager que nous progressions dans nos capacités à écrire de la musique, et peut-être faire quelque chose de différent de nos chansons, cependant, je pense que le résultat final sonnera toujours comme du Vanishing Point. Nous n’avons pas de raison de changer, car nous pensons en fait avoir notre propre son d’une certaine manière, et nous en somme satisfaits. 4) Quels style smusicaux écoutez-vous en priorité?
J’écoute divers styles de musique, dernièrement, j’ai écouté le dernier Josh Groban, le dernier Emperor ainsi que quelques disques de classique. Ma collection de CD comprend de tout, du classique au prog, passant par le metal, de l’adult rock, mais aussi du death et du black ehehehe…on peut dire que mes goûts vont du subtil à l’extrême.
5) Préférez-vous partir en tournée ou enregistrer de nouvelles choses?
Il s’agit principalement de tourner avec ce groupe pour moi, en fait, c’est quelque chose que tout le monde au sein du groupe adore faire, jouer live, rencontrer des gens et voir des tas d’endroits différents, ce sont des choses que nous apprécions tout particulièrement.
J’aime aussi enregistrer du nouveau matériel, mais je dois dire qu’au bout d’un moment, mes oreilles fatiguent et je sens que je peux devenir dingue en studio. Pour "The Fourth Season", j’étais là la plupart du temps, et pas seulement pour enregistrer, mais également pour éditer des choses avec notre producteur et notre ingénieur, ce qui parfois était intéressant à essayer néanmoins. Au final, moi et le reste des gars sommes très fiers de ce disque, même si je ne peux nier que parfois le studio est quelque chose d’ennuyeux, et je finis par être disons peu enclin à la communication lorsque je me concentre sur des choses sérieuses en profondeur ! 6) Comment les choses évoluent pour le hard-rock et le heavy metal en Australie?
Cela se passe très bien pour le métal en Australie, en fait nous avons tellement de groupes de carrure internationale qui tournent dans le pays, contrairement au passé, que ça en devient presque dingue, ce qui est bien d’un côté, néanmoins de nombreux groupes australiens en sont affectés.
Pour les groupes locaux comme nous, les choses s’améliorent, avec tous ces jeunes qui viennent au métal, c’est positif et nous gagnons de nouveaux fans, ce qui est cool.
Je pense que d’une certaine façon, la musique jouée par des groupes australiens devient de plus en plus acceptée, parce que la qualité des albums s’améliore, ce qui explique peut-être pourquoi le public s’intéresse plus à ce que nous faisons, peut-être est-ce la distance avec l’Europe qui joue également un rôle dans notre son, et il semblerait que nous ne soyons pas dans une « pagaille » au sein de laquelle tout le monde sonne de la même façon, si je puis dire. 7) Quel est votre groupe de metal favori en Australie? Je dois dire que Black Majesty fait des choses excellentes, et du fait que nous soyons des amis de longue date, j’ai d’abord le plus grand des respects pour eux, ensuite, j’adore la voix du chanteur, John. C’est compliqué, parce qu’il y a tellement de groupes d’ici que j’aime vraiment, mais cela prendrait une page et demie pour écrire tous leurs noms ! Nous avons beaucoup de talents ici, comme partout ailleurs. 8) Vanishing Point fait du power metal mélodique européen. Quel est selon vous la caractéristique qui distingue votre son, et qui vous sépare des autres groupes du genre? Quels groupes donc a influencé votre style? Je dirais que nous sommes, bien entendu, influencés par des groupes comme Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, et peut-être Paradise lost, pour beaucoup d’aspects, mais je pourrais poursuivre en citant des noms comme Journey, ou Toto aussi. Il est difficile de dire quels groupes nous influencent de façon directe, car nous avons au sein du groupe tellement d’influences différentes…
9) Vous semblez être sensible à la création des paroles et des covers de grande qualité. Parlez-nous un peu de cela, de vos auteurs et artistes favoris...
Pour être honnête avec toi, je n’ai pas vraiment d’auteur favori par rapport aux nombreux livres que j’ai lu dans le passé ; je dois dire que je n’ai pas trop prêté attention à l’auteur, ahaha.. je lis beaucoup d'histoires de vies réalistes, et écris des paroles sur la façon que j’ai de voir les choses, comme les autres gars, je n’ai jamais lu une histoire fantastique, c’est certainement pour cela que nous n’avons pas de thème sur le fantastique dans nos paroles et musiques. Je pense que, d’une certaine manière, la vie réelle a tellement à offrir, et lorsqu’il s’agit d’écrire des paroles, qu’elles soient positives ou négatives, le retour que l’on voit de la part des gens à propos de ces paroles est beaucoup axé sur ce que nous traversons tous dans nos propres parcours.
Désolé de dire cela, je n’ai pas beaucoup d’artistes favoris, ahaha…Je pourrais parler peut-être de certaines peintures de la renaissance qui pour moi sont belles, cependant, j’aime beaucoup ce qui se fait dans l’art digital, comme Travis Smith et Niklas Sundin. Il y a tellement d’artistes qui font un bon travail qu’il est difficile de se rappeler d’eux. Pour moi, lorsqu’une image me coupe le souffle, parfois je ne tiens pas à savoir qui est l’artiste, parce que je ne veux pas être confronté à une « re-création » de ce travail ; je préfère savourer le moment, et voir la chose avec mes propres yeux, et non dans le cadre d’une collection.
L’artiste qui intervient généralement pour nos albums est Michael Lenarcic, qui est un ami à nous ici à Melbourne. Son travail est très profond, ce que nous apprécions, il a fait l’artwork pour "Embrace the Silence" et "Tangled In Dream", cependant, pour "The Fourth Season", la pochette a été en fait créée par Kadri Umbleja, en Estonie, qui fait également de belles créations, et qui, si j’en juge par le retour que nous avons eu, risque d’être occupé dans le futur, ahahah…. Je pense que c’est une bonne chose, nous avons le plus grand respect pour ces personnes que nous sentons impliqués avec Vanishing Point, donc je n’ai que des bonnes choses à dire les concernant.
10) Quels sont vos projets pour promouvoir votre nouvel album? Avez-vous des hows ou une tournée de prévu? En Australie, nous allons jouer en live autant que possible, et tournerons d’état en état de nombreuses fois, j’en suis sûr. Pour ce qui est de l’Europe, du Japon et de l’Amérique, il n’y a rien de certain pour l’instant, malheureusement, nous voulons vraiment y aller jouer et tourner, cependant, il semble qu’on nous oublie pour l’instant, parce que les promoteurs pensent que nous voulons plein d’argent, étant donné que nous venons d’Australie. Nous voulons vraiment tourner là-bas, faire que ça arrive. D’ailleurs, je peux te dire qe si tu connais quelqu’un qui veut nous faire venir en Europe, alors je serais le premier à venir te voir et à te payer une bière, ahahah… Peut-être que cette fois nous tournerons en Europe, nous ne pouvons qu’espérer, parce que nous n’avons pas eu cette chance pour "Embrace The Silence", nous n’avions eu aucune offre, ce qui était très frustrant pour nous ; peut-être que le fait que nous soyons signés sur un petit label est un obstacle, cela dit, crois moi quand je te dis qe nous voulons vraiment faire que cela arrive, et jouer pour le public ce qu’ils peuvent entendre sur CD. Répands le mot autour de toi si tu peux ; c’est dingue le temps qui est passé depuis la dernière fois où nous sommes allés en Europe, et nous recevons tellement de mails de fans nous demandant quand allons nous revenir, et comme d’habitude, nous ne savons pas quoi répondre et cela nous frustre d’autant plus de ne pas pourvoir revenir. Avec un peu de chance, nous rectifierons le tir cette fois, je croise les doigts. 11) Y-a t'il un album live ou un DVD dans vos projets?
Pas encore, il y avait eu une discussion avec une ancienne société de production que nous avions, selon lesquelles il pourrait y avoir un DVD, cependant nous avons perçu cela comme étant prématuré, et c’était de l’argent à se faire pour les enfoirés avec qui nous étions précédemment. Si nous devions faire un DVD, nous essayerions de faire quelque chose de spécial, et pas juste une collection stupide de conneries pour enrichir le marché entre deux albums. Lorsque les DVDs musicaux se sont mis à sortir il y a des années, il y avait une espèce de « nostalgie » avec les groupes (sic), maintenant, n’importe qui sort un DVD. Honnêtement, nous n’avons pas le budget pour un DVD live pour le moment. Peut-être qu’un jour nous aurons l’opportunité d’en faire un, mais nous le ferons comme il faut.

D’abord, je voudrais te remercier pour avoir pris le temps de nous interviewer, et pour avoir manifesté de l’intérêt pour notre musique, cela représente beaucoup pour le groupe. Thanx and peace. Chris ENGLISH VERSION 1) Hello everybody. Congratulations on your new release. Please give us some biography notes concerning your musical career so far. Thankyou very much for the compliment , it is truly appreciated :)
Vanishing Point started over ten years ago under the band name EYE which consisted of Jack Lukic , Tommy Vucur , Joe Del Mastro and Simon Lukic from what I believe .
Silvio Massaro joined the band in 1995 and the band recorded In Thought originally with another guitarist by the name of Andrew , I had joined the band in 1997 and in 1999 we had recorded Tangled In Dream , we had toured Europe in 2001 with Gamma Ray and Sonata Arctica as we we had played Wacken the year before in 2000.
In 2005 we released through new label Dockyard 1 Embrace The Silence and we have toured domestically quite alot supporting Gamma Ray , Nightwish ,Zak Wylde’s Black Label Society and Dragonforce which was really cool , amongst all that we had alot of our own shows here in Australia yet unfortunaltely no luck in getting back to Europe since 2001.
Since then we have recorded and released through Dockyard 1 our new album which is album number four ironically titled The Fourth Season.
We also have two new members in the band in Adrian Alimic on bass guitar and Christian Nativo on drums who have replaced Jack Lukic and Joe Del Mastro. 2) Are you satisfied with the feedback that “The fourth season” is receiving? Yes , we are happy with the little feedback we have recieved so far , its hard to hear lot since we live so far away in Australia yet we are pleasantly suprised that so many people and journalists seem to like our music as well with the latest album , of course we wish to be touring with this album so we will see how things go , so far it is a little too early to tell . 3) “The fourth season” is a melodic rock album. Do you see yourself exploring other musical styles in the future or are you going to stay loyal to the same kind of music? I’m not sure , we always in a way see ourselves as writing music that makes us feel good and we tend to go with whatever naturally comes out of us artistically , we dont tend to have any contrived approach or have any preconceived plans as to how our songs will turn out in the end , in a way it keeps us interested this way as we dont write songs just for contract fodder and we feel that we can give our best when we feel the songs instead of playing the songs as if they are cover songs heh heh .
As for the future album releases , I can perhaps see us progressing within our abilities in writing music and perhaps doing some things different within our songs yet I still think the end result will still sound like Vanishing Point , we have no reason to change because we actually feel that we have our own sound in a way and we are comfortable with the way we sound. 4) What kind of stuff are you listening to lately? I listen to all different styles of music , lately I have been listening to that latest Josh Groban album , the last Emperor album as well as some classical music .
My cd collection of music stems from anything and everything from classical music, prog rock , metal , AOR , to death and black metal heh heh so you could say my musical tastes vary from the subtle spectrum to the extreme heh heh . 5) You prefer touring or recording new material? I would be a liar if I said that I didnt live for touring with this band , in fact it is something that all of us in the band love doing , playing live, meeting people and seeing so many different places is something that we enjoy very much .
I enjoy recording new material as well but I must say that after a while my ears get a little tired and I feel like I am going crazy in the studio , with the Fourth Season I was there alot of the time not only recording , I found myself in the studio for a long time doing all the technical editing with our producer and engineer which was good yet trying sometimes.
In the end I felt like the rest of the guys that we made an album that we are proud of and very happy with yet I cant deny that sometimes the recording studio can annoy me after a while and I end of being very lets just say uncommunicative when I am concentrating on the more in depth stuff heh heh . 6) How are things evolving for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in Australia? Things are going really well for metal in Australia , in fact we have so many international bands tour here now unlike in the past , we have so many bands touring here now that it is becoming crazy which in a way is a good thing yet so many Australian bands suffer as a result .
For us local bands the scene is becoming better with so many young kids now getting into metal music so iti is a positive and we seem to be getting newer fans alot as well which is cool .
I think that in a way metal music here from Australian bands is becoming more and more accepted because the quality of albums coming from all the bands is getting better and better which is perhaps why the audiences are paying more attention to what we are doing , maybe it is the distance from Europe as well that maybe plays a different role within our sounds and we dont seem to be too cluttered with everyone sounding the same if I may say so .
7) What if your favorite metal band from Australia?
For me I have to say that Black Majesty are doing great things and because we are long time friends with the guys, I firstly have utmost respect for them and secondly because I love John the singers voice , its hard because there are so many bands here now that I really like but I would have to really write a full page and a half of who I like heh heh, we have alot of talent here like everywhere else. 8) Vanishing Point play melodic european power/metal. What do you think is the most distinguishing characteristic of your sound, that seperates you from other bands of the genre? Also, which bands do you herald as influences to your music? Of course I would say that we are inspired by bands like Iron Maiden , Queesnryche,Dream Theater, Fates Warning and perhaps Paradise Lost in many ways but then I could go on and say that we love bands like Journey and Toto as well heh heh .
Its hard to say which bands directly influence us because we as a band have so many varied tastes being five different guys yet we seem to always like the core foundations on perhaps what Vanishing Point ‘s sound comes from as previously mentioned. 9) You seem to have an affection towards the creation of lyrics and covers of great quality . Tell us a bit about that, as well as your favorite authors and artists. To be honest with you I dont have many favourite authors in fact from the many books I have read in the past, I would have to say I really have paid not much attention to the author heh heh , I read alot about real life stories and write lyrics about the way that I see things as do the other guys , I have never read any fantasty stories so that is perhaps the reason why we dont have any fantasy based themes in our music and lyrics .
I feel in a way that real life has so much to offer when writing lyrics whether they be positive or negative because the feedback we get from people about our lyrics seems to be grounded in terms of understanding what we all go through in our own journey.
Sorry to say that I dont really have many favourite artists heh heh , perhaps some of the old renaissance paintings for me are beautiful yet I really like alot of art that is coming through in digital art like Travis Smith and Niklas Sundin.
There are so many artists with beautiful works it is hard to remember them , for me when a picture takes my breath away I would rather sometimes not know who the artist is because I dont want to see another recreation of that work, I would rather savour the moment as to how I see the artwork with my own eyes not a collection.
The artist we generally use for our albums in Michael Lenarcic who is a friend of ours here in Melbourne , his work is very grounded and very indepth which we like , he did the artwork for Embrace The Silence And Tangled In Dream yet with the Fourth Season the album cover was actually created by Kadri Umbleja from Estonia who has some beautiful artwork as well which I think judging by the responses we have been recieving she may be busy in the future heh heh which I think is a good thing , we have utmost respect for these people who we feel involved with Vanishing Point so I can only have good things to say about them . 10) What are your plans to promote the release of the new album? Do you have any gigs or tours lined up? In Australia we will be playing live as much as possible and touring interstate many times I’m sure .
As for playing in Europe , Japan and America , there are no firm plans to come over yet unfortunately, we really want to come over and play and tour yet we seem to be overlooked at times because promoters think that we want so much money coming from Australia , we really want to tour there and make it happen in fact I can tell you that if you know someone why wants to bring us over to Europe then I’ll be the first guy to buy you a beer heh heh .
Maybe this time we will tour Europe, we can only hope because we didnt get a chance to tour with Embrace The Silence because we did not have any offers which was really frustrating for us and because we are signed to a small label maybe thats a hindrance , yet beleive me we really want to make it happen and slay the crowds there and play for them live what they hear on cd , put the word out there if you can , we honestly feel that it has been so long since we have toured Europe that it is crazy and we get so many emails from fans asking when the fuck will we come back , as usual we dont know what to say and it gets us down as well that we cant get back there .
Hopefully this time we will be back and amend this situation, I have my fingers crossed .
11) Are there any plans of releasing a live album or a DVD?
Not yet , there was talk with a previous management company that we were with that there was going to be a dvd yet in all honesty we saw it as a premature thing to do and a cash in financially for the previous bastards we were with , if we will do a dvd it we will try to make it special for the fans and not just some stupid collection of bullshit to appease the market in between albums , when music dvds came out years ago there was somewhat of a nostalgia with the bands , now every man and his dog is making a dvd heh heh .
We honestly don’t have the big budget for a live dvd at the moment , perhaps one day we will get the opportunity to do one , but do it properly . 12) Thank you. The last words belong to you.
