Si la vierge de fer était née de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique elle se nommerait Zandelle. Très axé par des affinités avec le metal européen les américains sans révolutionner le style apporte un album qui devrait en ravir plus d'un... 1. Pouvez-vous présenter à nos lecteurs l’histoire de Zandelle ?
A l’automne 2005, j’ai (George Tsalikis) enregistré quelques chansons que j’avais écrites au fil des années depuis mon départ du groupe de heavy metal Gothic Knights. J’ai appelé deux de mes amis, un batteur Amit Lahav et un guitariste Kirk Passomonti. Ils ont appris les six chansons et l’hiver de cette année là, nous sommes allés au studio d’enregistrement. Début 2006, c’était fait. Quelques temps après, j’ai été présenté à Denis Gulbey de Sentinel Steel qui écouta l’enregistrement et m’offrit un deal pour la distribution. Zandelle était né. Après six années et quelques changements de line-up, nous nous sommes produits au Baltimore Power Mad Festival où nous avons rencontré Martin Brandt. Il nous a offert de faire passer une démo à un de ses amis du LMP Records (à ce moment, nous avions deux albums enregistrés et étions en train de terminer notre dernier projet). Quelques mois plus tard, j’ai reçu un e-mail de LMP qui demandait à avoir plus de matériel à écouter. Rapidement, nous avons signés notre premier deal avec LMP Records. Notre premier album officiel « Twilight On Humanity » a été enregistré en 2002. Mais la signature du groupe nous a apporté autant de joie qu’elle nous a mis à l’épreuve. Réalisant que nous avions besoin de nous hisser au sommet, des tensions intervinrent entre notre guitariste TW Durfy et le reste du groupe résultant du désaccord entre notre batteur Bob Delmini et TW Durfy. D’autres circonstances, comme la blessure de notre nouveau batteur Joe’Jofu Cardillo a forcé le groupe à repousser la production de notre nouvel album. Mais avec force et persévérance, nous avons continué et maintenant vous avez notre dernier travail, « Vengeance Rising ».
2. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d’appeler votre nouvel album « Vengeance Rising », est-ce que cela signifie quelque chose de spécial ?
Nous avons tourné autour de pas mal d’idées avant de s’arrêter sur « Vengeance Rising ». Nous avons trouvé que ce nom sonnait très puissant. Dans un sens, cela représente la façon dont nous nous sommes battus pour parvenir à faire cet album…comme si nous avions traversé les épreuves avec une certaine vengeance. Nous aimions aussi le fait que ce soit aussi le titre d’une des chansons dans la trilogie Beowulf que nous avons créées, ce qui était un des meilleurs morceaux de l’album.
3. Comment était l’enregistrement ?
Lent et fatiguant. Comme j’ai mentionné précédemment, nous avons eu pas mal de difficultés à surmonter pour réaliser le produit final incluant les changements de membres et une blessure à la main sérieuse. A un moment donné, nous pensions ne jamais finir. Avec soulagement, nous sommes finalement parvenus à nos fins.
4. Qui a décidé du choix de la cover?
Comme tout ce qui implique le groupe, ce fut une décision collective. Dans un premier temps, nous avions choisi d’utiliser une pièce d’art contemporaine. Cette fois, nous avons pensé qu’il était mieux de choisir quelque chose qui représentait plus le groupe et l’album lui-même. Nous nous sommes inspirés une fois de plus de la trilogie de Beowulf et nous sommes très heureux du résultat.
5. Comment est la scène metal aux Etats-Unis ?
Elle craint. Elle est faible et pathétique et juste une simple ombre de sa précédente gloire. Le metal devient petit et il n’y a aucun soutien des radios ou des programmes musicaux télévisés et la majorité des clubs ne sont pas mieux. Il existe cependant quelques personnes qui font de leur mieux pour faire perdurer la scène avec les groupes, donc un grand merci à eux. Tout ce que je peux dire, est que nous allons continuer à faire notre possible pour ramener la scène metal à son apogée.
6. Etes-vous célèbre aux Etats-Unis ? Quelles sont les relations entre Zandelle et les autres groupes américains ?
Malheureusement, pas encore. Nous commençons à nous faire connaître parmi la communauté metal qui est encore beaucoup trop petite mais nous ne sommes nulle part parmi les grands du metal. Peut-être notre troisième album nous aidera et nous poussera dans cette direction.
7. Pensez-vous jouer en live?
Nous essayons de jouer au moins un show par mois localement. Cela ne paraît pas beaucoup, mais vu comment la scène devient, on peut difficilement faire mieux et la force du groupe va diminuer significativement. Parfois, nous essayons de décrocher un show plus prestigieux comme certains festivals metal à travers le pays, comme le Milwaukee Metalfest, PowerMad Festival, Classic Metal Fest et le Brooklyn Metal Fest, pour en nommer quelques-uns.
8. Est-ce que les débuts pour un groupe américain sont difficiles ?
Le début n’est pas trop dur. Je pense que le maintien est moins simple lorsque les gens réalisent qu’ils ne deviendront jamais des rocks stars. C’est aussi très difficile de trouver des musiciens talentueux, dévoués et avec un esprit sérieux surtout dans un lieu qui n’est pas très propice à ce genre de musique.
9. Quelles sont vos influences ?
Nos influences viennent surtout des classiques groupes de metal comme Iron Maiden, Metallica à ses débuts, Megadeth, Queensryche, Dio et Judas Priest, et aussi Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Symphony X, et Dream Theater.
10. Qu’aimez-vous faire au-delà du metal ? Quels sont vos hobbies ?
Au-delà du metal, je suis aussi très impliqué dans les arts martiaux. J’ai été un élève de Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate dans les 23 dernières années. J’ai aussi commencé à étudier le katana (épée Samouraï) pendant environ dix ans et j’ai commencé à devenir un collectionneur avide d’épées. Le tir à l’arc est un autre de mes hobbies. J’adore tirer à l’arc (seulement sur des cibles, pas des animaux vivants). Et pour les trois dernières années, je me suis investi dans le théâtre et ai participé à environ quinze représentations (ce qui n’est pas énorme de nos jours).
11. Quel est le niveau que le groupe peut atteindre ? Conquérir l’Europe… ?
Nous aimerions beaucoup cela. Nous prenons notre musique très au sérieux et espérons faire cela pour de longues années encore même s’il y a cent ou un million de fans. Cela vient de la musique et du talent. Il n’y a pas de meilleur sentiment au monde que d’être sur une scène à jouer la musique qui coule dans nos veines.
12. Y a-t-il autre chose que vous voudriez dire à vos fans Français ?
Nous aimerions tous vous remercier pour votre soutien et si tout va bien, on se verra avant la fin 2007, comme une petite tournée européenne est prévue. Jusque là, … TRUE METAL FOREVER!!!

Merci ! ENGLISH VERSION 1.Could you please tell our readers a little bit about Zandelle's history?
In the Autumn of 2005 I (George Tsalikis) took it upon myself to record some
songs I had written over the years since my departure from the Heavy Metal
band Gothic Knights. I called upon two friends of mine, drummer Amit Lahav
and guitarist Kirk Passomonti. They learned the six songs and in the Winter
of that year we went into the recording studio. By the beginning of 2006, I
had my recording. Shortly thereafter I was introduced to Denis Gulbey of
Sentinel Steel who heard the recording and offered me a distribution deal.
Thus, Zandelle was born. About six years and many member changes later, we
found ourselves performing at Baltimore¹s PowerMad Festival where we had met
Martin Brandt. He offered to pass along a demo (by that time we had two
independent albums released and were nearly finished with our latest
project) to a friend of his at LMP Records. A few months later I received
an email from someone at LMP requesting to hear more material. Shortly
thereafter we signed our first record deal with LMP Records. Our first
official album ³Twilight on Humanity² was released in 2002. But, the band¹s
signing brought forth as much hardship as it did joy. Realizing we needed
to bring ourselves to a higher standard as well as tensions between
guitarist TW Durfy and the rest of the band, resulted in the parting of ways
with both drummer Bob Delmini and TW Durfy. Other hardships including the
severe injury our new drummer Joe ³Jofu² Cardillo suffered forced the band
to delay production of our next album. But through shear drive and
perseverance we prevailed and now you have our latest work, ³Vengeance
Rising.²
2.Why have you chosen to call the new album " Vengeance rising", does it
mean anything special?
We threw around a few different ideas before we ultimately we decided to
call it "Vengeance Rising". We felt that title sounded very powerful and
moving. In a way it also represents how we overcame so much to finally
release the album... as if we rose from the hardship with a vengeance. We
also liked that it was also the title of one of the songs in the Beowulf
Trilogy we created which to us was one of the best parts of the album. 3.How was the recording process?
Slow and exhausting. As I mentioned earlier, we had quite a bit of
difficulties which we had to overcome to create the final product, including
member changes and a severe hand injury. At some points we thought it would
never get completed. Thankfully we were finally able to rise above the
hardship and complete the album.
4.Who decides what kind of cover you should have?
As with all things involving the band, it's a collective decision. The
first time around, we opted to go with the less expensive route of
purchasing the rights to use an existing piece of art. This time, we felt
it would be better to go with an original piece that more closely represents
the band and the album itself. We went once more to the Beowulf Trilogy for
inspiration and we were very pleased with the results.
5.What is the metal scene like in USA?
It sucks. It's very lame and pathetic and only a mere shadow of its former
glory. Metal gets little or no support from the radio or any televised
music program and the majority of the clubs are no better. There are
however a few people who are doing all they can to regenerate the scene
along with the bands, so it is improving thanks to them. All I can say is
that we will continue to do all we can to bring the Metal scene back to the
height it deserves.
6.Are you famous in USA? What is the relationship between Zandelle and the
others American bands?
Unfortunately, not yet. We are starting to get our name known in the Metal
community which unfortunately is still quite small but we're nowhere near
the level of "famous". Perhaps our third release will help push us closer
in that direction. 7.How many chances do you get to play live?
We try to play at least one local show each month. That doesn't sound like
a lot, but with the scene being what it is, any more than that and the
drawing power of the band will significantly diminish. Occasionally we try
to get on more prestigious shows such as the Metal Festivals that take place
throughout the country, such as Milwaukee Metalfest, PowerMad Festival,
Classic Metal Fest and the Brooklyn Metal Fest, just to name a few. 8.Is the start for an American metal band difficult?
The start isn't so difficult. I think the maintaining is much more
difficult when people realize they won't become rock stars overnight. It's
also very difficult to find talented, dedicated and serious-minded musicians
especially in an area where this style of music is not overly popular. 9.Who are some of your influences?
Our influences range from the classic Metal bands such as Iron Maiden, early
Metallica, Megadeth, Queensryche, Dio, and Judas Priest, to some of the more
current bands such as Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Symphony X, and Dream
Theater. 10.What are you like doing besides playing to Metal? What are your hobbies?
Besides playing Metal, I'm also heavily into Martial Arts. I've been a
student of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate for the past 23 years. I've also
started studying the katana (Samurai Sword) about a decade ago and have
become quite the avid collector of high end swords. Archery is another of
my hobbies. I enjoy shooting a re-curve bow (targets only... no live
animals). And for the past three years I've delved into acting and have
done over fifteen plays in my spare time (which there isn't much of these
days). 11.What is the level that the band can reach? Conquer Europe or something?
We would certainly like to do that and much more. We take our music very
seriously and we hope to be doing this for a very long time whether it's to
a few hundred fans or a few million fans. It's all about the music and the
performance. There's not greater feeling in the world that to be on stage
performing the music that we poured our blood, sweat, and tears into. 12.Is there anything you would like to say to the French fans?
We would like to thank you all very much for your support and if all goes as
planned, we'll be seeing you before the end of 2007 as we are currently in
the planning stages of a mini-tour of Europe. Until then... TRUE METAL
FOREVER!!!
