12. Qui est votre modèle dans le metal?
13. Arrivederci fratelli di metal! Tes derniers sentiments....
ENGLISH VERSION 1.Good morning men ! How is born Domine ? Hi ! Well, we formed like most of the band, getting five school mates together to play the music we liked. We formed in 1983 and we went on learning how to play, doing demo tapes from 1986 to 1994. It was very difficult to play Metal in Italy in those days. Then we had some drastic line-up changes. Of the original line-up only me and my brother Riccardo on bass are still in the band today and we finally recorded our first album when singer Morby and drummer Mimmo came in the picture. Since then we released 4 albums, did a European tour, played many festivals and we are now releasing our fifth album “Ancient Spirit Rising”. 2. How can you explain that many epico-symphonic bands (Heimdall, Rhapsody, Skylark...) comes from Italy? There are not that many anymore. It’s true the Italian Metal scene is interested in classic Metal, it has always been more into classic and melodic Metal than more extreme stuff. Bands like Iron Maiden, Manowar, Saxon, Judas Priest were always very popular. Then, at the end of the 90’s, Rhapsody went very successful and so many young bands tried to play the same stuff. There are not that many anymore because a lot of your bands gave up after they realised they could not be superstars overnight. There are still many classic Heavy Metal band. I guess melody is part of our culture. 3. I’ve seen you at Wacken Open Air. Your music is more heavy in live than on the discs. Is it a choice? Yes. We believe an Heavy Metal band should be… HEAVY Metal on stage. We work very hard on the albums, to have great arrangements and record very complete songs. Our new album has very rich arrangements, some songs have more than 50 track of instruments and vocals. When you sit at home, you can listen to the cd and appreciate all the changes and various instruments in a song. When we play live, we are five musicians who play Heavy Metal, so the songs have less instruments and are more simple, but they are amplified by a live aggressiveness and the power of volume. We don’t want to use pre-recorded backing tracks and we believe it’s good to have these two sides of our style. Also the songs in the album could be roughly divided into the more Heavy Metal, short and fast songs and the more complex, long and Epic tracks. 4. Is this easy to make abstraction of all the music you listen in the kind of yours, when you compose in order to be the most personnel? I think is almost impossible to stay totally un-influenced by the music you love. I became a musician because of the bands and records I loved. I’ve been a music fan before I was a musician. But of course, a band goes on creating its own style and music. Domine has its own trademark sound but you can tell we love bands like Queen, Maiden, Manowar, Thin Lizzy, Kansas, Rainbow, just to name a few. I guess the sound of a band is done by putting together both the personalities of the musicians, their influences, their own ideas and they own dreams. 5. Now, do you earn enough money with your music? Can you live of it? I don’t know why but a lot of people ask me this. No, we are not a totally professional band. We earn enough to keep the band going, keeping our rehearsal place, paying our roadies and updating our instruments. We are selling enough that our record label can give us a good budget for the recording studio and some good promotion. But we can not live with the money from the band, we do have day jobs, but we have created our lives in a way that we can always be available to play. To be fully professional, a band must be really successful, sell a lot of records and tour a lot. There is a big difference between the big bands and all the others, like we are. 6. Which are the fans who reserve the best reception to you? We mostly play in Italy and that’s where our fan base is. Italian guys see us live all the time, so they know who we are and what we can do. We are doing very well in Italy, of course, and our albums are always licensed in Japan, Russia, Far East, sometimes in USA and South America but not always. We are having decent results also in some European countries like Germany and Greece. But of course, we would like to be well received everywhere. Our music is for everybody who wants to listen to it, we don’t believe in genre or country boundaries. 7. Italy is a direct road to the Balkans and evenmore far to the east countries. Are these lands interest the band? And does the market seem to you quite rich? Uhm, I don’t really know. To be honest I don’t know much about the Easten European countries. We have played in Lithuania during the European tour and our albums are licensed in Russia and some are distributed in those countries. But I think we are not that big to create a big interest. 8. Do your texts hide metaphor or are they just imaginary? The themes of the lyrics of “Ancient Spirit Rising” move away from the Sword’n’Sorcery books references you find in Domine’s previous albums or the usual clichés of most Heavy Metal bands. “Ancient Spirit Rising” lyrics deal with universal themes, life, death, joy and sorrow, freedom and misery, all of which are expressed in a poetic, romantic and epic style. I’ve always used metaphors, of course, in every album, but most of the songs of previous albums were based on specific books, like Michael Moorcock’s “Elric Of Melnibonè” of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”. This time I wanted to avoid swords, steel, dragons and dungeons and write about personal feelings and views on life, keeping an epic feel to meet the tone of the music. Wthout sounding too pretentious or arrogant, I would like to follow the path of great song-writers like Tori Amos, Kate Bush or Freddie Mercury, who have written amazing songs about their own personal ideas and feelings. Most of the songs of “Ancient Spirit Rising” are like this, others have reference. “The Lady Of Shalott” is inspired by the evocative painting by W. Waterhouse and by the Alfred Tennyson poem by the same name. “I Stand Alone (After The Fall)” is inspired by Elric’s saga, at least one was had to be the “old way”. The rest is all personal thoughts.
Next album ? Oh man, I’ll think about it in the future !!! I’ve worked so hard on this new one, I will take sometime before I’ll start working on the next one. But I guess we will go with the same attitude, try to go on with our style but changing a few things to make it different and more interesting. 10. Rhapsody of Fire is the pioneer of Heavy Music. Do you think so everything which comes from your country, seems to the people more serious? In part, yes. Before Rhapsody and Lacuna Coil, Italian bands were seen as totally incapable to play Heavy Metal. So, in a way they show people it can be done. But then bands go on with their own forces and work, and not everything that comes out of Italy is seen as good. Some bands have created some interest, also because of Rhapsody and Lacuna Coil, but also because they worked hard. You know…not just pizza and spaghetti… Actually, there is also the other side of the coin. Now Power Metal is not popular anymore in countries like Germany, and magazines treat Italian bands, even Rhapsody, as average stuff of poor quality, even if they were the ones which supported the genre when it was popular. 11. In order to make the band known, should you play with a famous band? We have played with bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Dream Theater. We would play again with these kind of bands everyday ! 12. Who’s your model band in metal? There are many fantastic Heavy metal bands that I like. It’s very difficult to say just one name, except for my all time fave band, which is Queen. When I’m asked this question I usually end up writing a long list. Let’s just say Maiden, Sabbath, Priest and Manowar. 13. Arrivederci fratelli di metal! Your last feelings... Merci beaucoup mon ami (in french), thanks a lot for your time. I invite the metal kids to check out our new album “Ancient Spirit Rising”, I hope you will enjoy it, and our web-site and our MySpace.
