Unanimated Interview réalisée par mail avec Micke Jansson, le chanteur.

Depuis un certain temps le retour aux racines pousse les groupes de tous poils à réchauffer les bonnes vielles recettes qui ont fait leurs preuves par le passé. Les Suédois viennent de ranimer grâce à "In the light of Darkness" le bon vieux Thrash Death à la Suédoise. Dismember, Entombed, Unleashed planquez vos fesses, Unanimated risque de botter quelques arrières- trains!!

1. Comment est né Unanimated?

Tout a commencé en 1988. Et le line-up était plutôt différent de ce qu'il est aujourd'hui. Mais Richard, Jojje et Peter était avec Unanimated malgré cela. C'était une bande de potes influencés par la scène de 1988 ; Bathory, Mayhem, Morbid Angel faisaient parti de ces groupes. Ca marqua le début d'Unanimated.

2. Penses tu que vous avez atteint un stade de maturité avec votre dernier album?

Je pense que notre dernier album est notre meilleur travail de loin. Il reflète une façon d'être et ce que nous sommes devenus sous cette période. Je n'aime pas comparer "In the Light Of Darkness" avec "Ancient God Of Evil" ou "In The Forest Of The Dreaming Dead" par exemple. Mais je crois que c'est inévitable. Le nouveau est plus honnête que les deux autres à mon avis. Nous avons été fidèles à nous-mêmes comme nous ne l'avons jamais été. Et en l'occurence, oui je pense que nous avons atteint une forme de d'accomplissement avec "In The Light Of Darkness".

3. Votre précédent album date de 1995, pourquoi une si longue absence?

Nous avons simplement eu une période creuse dûe à divers facteurs, comme le fait que l'on tournait avec d'autres groupes, Richard a déménagé au Texas, et Micke a fait un séjour en prison, des choses comme cela... Mais, nous avons décidé de reprendre le groupe après ce coup de frein en rebossant sur le porjet tous les quatre. Et en 1998, Richard et Jojje ont recommencé à écrire des chansons et nous n'avons rien pu sortir à cause des raisons que je viens d'évoquer. Donc, petit à petit, nous sommes revenus et nous voici...la tempête de feu est de retour!!!

4. Comment décrirais-tu la musique d'Unanimated?

Black Death! Tout simplement parce que nous jouons du Black Death Métal, pourquoi compliquer les choses. Non, sérieusement, je ne sais pas vraiment, les gens qui nous écoutent nous décrivent comme cela. Mais je dirais du Black Death, et j'espère comme ça ne vexer personne, hehe!

5. Avez-vous réalisé une vidéo?

Non, nous n'en avons pas fait malheureusement. Mais ne t'inquiètes pas, nous avons prévu d'en faire une dans le futur.

6. Qui a réalisé l'artwork?

C'est une bon pote Erik Danielsson (Watain) qui nous a fait cette pièce de maître. Il a également apporté sa contribution à des paroles également. Il a fait du bon boulot et nous en sommes très contents. Et j'espère qu'il en est de même pour lui.

7. Ta définition du Black Métal?

Ma première pensée va aux vieux hymnes de Bathory, le Black Métal se jouait à l'ancienne avec de l'agressivité.

8. Y a t'il une signification derrière votre nom?

J'ai bien peur que non, quand en 1988 Jojje a trouvé ce nom Unanimated, cela signifiait "sans vie". C'est comme cela que nous avons eu ce nom, qui sonnait vraiment cool avant et encore aujourd'hui. Il n'y a pas à chercher plus loin.

9. Maintenant que vous avez un nouvel album sous le bras, est-ce que l'on peut vous attendre sur scène à travers l'Europe bientôt?

Je l'espère, mais ça devient plus compliqué. Maintenant, nous avons tous des enfants, des obligations d'enfer pour ces petits métal kids. Et Richard vit de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique. Mais nous espérons faire quelques shows en dehors de l'Europe, voir même une petite tournée. Nous verrons tout cela, mais une chose est sûre, nous allons jouer comme l'été dernier au Party San Festival.

10. Comment se porte la scène métal suédoise?

La scène en Suède a pas mal changé dans plusieurs sens. Quelques grands groupes sont toujours présents et d'autres sont juste ridicules avec leur nouveau son et leur image au rabais. C'est aussi l'une des raisons pour laquelle nous avons enregistré 'In The Light Of Darkness", simplement pour leur rappeler qu'il existe encore des sons vrais et purs.

11. Unanimated est un priorité dans vos vies?

Oui, aussi longtemps que nos familles le tolèrent. Mais si tu veux dire par rapport aux autres groupes, ça dépend de ce qui se passera dans le futur, j'espère que nous le pourrons. Que nous pourrons garder en nous le feu pendant longtemps et ne pas s'endormir encore pendant quatorze ans...

12. J'aimerais te remercier d'avoir répondu à mes questions. je te souhaite le meilleur pour l'avenir et les derniers mots sont pour toi.

1) How did the Unanimated begin?

Well, it all started back in 1988. And the line up was slightly different from what it is today.
But Richard, Jojje and Peter was with Unanimated even then. It was a couple of youngsteers that was influenced-
by the scene as it was in -88, Bathory, Mayhem, Morbid Angel was a few bands that ment alot.
It became Unanimated.

2) Do you think you reached a kind of achievement or maturity with you last CD ?

I do think our latest album is our best work so far, It reflects somehow who we really are and what we have became under this period of time.
I dont like to compare "IN THE LIGHT OF DARKNESS" with "ANCIENT GOD OF EVIL" or "IN THE FOREST OF THE DREAMING DEAD" for that matter.
But i guess it is unavoidable in a way, The new one is more honest than the other two i think. We have been true to ourselfs in a way we have never before.
And in that matter of sence, yes we do think we have reached some kind of achievement with "IN THE LIGHT OF DARKNESS".

3) You before last album were released in 1995, why this sleep so long?

We simply had som downs within the band and due many factors that took its toll, like touring with other bands, Richard moving to Texas -
And Micke who was charged and sentenced to jail for a while, things like that.
But, we talked about getting together almost immediately after the brake-up but this time only the four of us.
And in -98 Richard and Jojje was writing songs and again of some reasons we couldnt get the band together due this factors i talked about.
So slowely we started to get back together, and here we are..THE FIRESTORM IS COMING!!

4) How is the music of Unanimated described ?

Black Death! Just simply because we play Black Death metal, why complicate things.
No, serioesly. I dont know really, thats up to those who listen to our music and wants to describe it i think.
But i would say black death, and hopefully i piss someone off, hehe.

5) Let’s talk about the music process of Unanimated?

Well, the difference is beyond any known words for it.
That is if you compare the albums and hear the obvious difference, and offcourse, we have been doing this for the last 20 years or so.
Even if we havent with each other, with known bands or with less known bands, we have all been active in one way or another.
I hope that answers your question.

6) Have you released vidéo?

No we have not, sadly. But do not fear, we may have plans to do so in the near future.

7) Who did the artwork ?

It was our good friend Erik Danielsson (WATAIN) who did that mastrpiece.
He also had a finger in some of the lyrics as well. He did a great work and we are very pleased.
And hopefully so is he.

8) Your definition of Black Metal?

My first thought is the old hymns of BATHORY, black metal played the old and aggressive way.

9) Is there any meaning behind the band name?

I am afraid not, back in 1988 Jojje found this name UNANIMATED that ment like "lifeless".
So thats were it comes from, sounded real cool back then, and is still. If you dont think about its other meaning.

10) Now with an excellent new album under your belt can we the audience expect you on stage throughout Europe soon?

Hope so, but its more complicated now to do. We all have children these days, little spawns of hell metal kids.
And Richard who livea across the ocean. But we do have our hopes to play a few gigs out in Europe, even a smaller tour.
We´ll see the outcome of that, one thing´s for sure, we will play live again as we did last summer in Party San Festival.

11) How do you feel about the metal scene in Sweden?

The metal scene in Sweden has changed in many ways, some great bands are still reign.
And some bands are just rediculus, with their new sound and cheap image.
Thats another reason for our release of "IN THE LIGHT OF DARKNESS", just to let them know that there´s still something real and true.
A noseburn so to speak.

12) Unanimated is a priority in your lifes

Yes, its a priority as long as our familys dont get burned in the run.
But if you mean towards other bands, that depends on what will happen in the future, hopefully we can -
Keep this fire burning a little longer and not put it to sleep another fourteen years.
