Du fin fond de l'Amérique du Sud (le Pérou) Nightwish et Skyward ont fait des émules. Nous vous présentons ce groupe qui n'a pas encore sorti d'album en Europe mais qui promet de belles heures au métal de ce continent. A Kaosguards on vous aura prévenu avant tout le monde. En route pour un voyage chez les pensionnaires de la cordillière des Andes... 1. Parle-nous un peu de l'origine de Yawarhiem, depuis combien de temps le groupe existe et quel est votre line-up actuel ?
Le groupe a débuté en 2004. Il y a quelques années, Aurora, Richie et moi (J.Miguel) avions un groupe de metal progressif néoclassique qu s'appelait Hiemis Animi, que nous avons laissé tomber car nous voulions créer un nouveau projet musical. Juste après cela, Aurora et moi avons pris le temps d'assembler nos idées afin de créer une nouvelle structure. Nous avons clairement décidé de changer notre précédent concept en un style innovateur, dans le but de créer au travers de la musique un monde mystique et des scènes intenses capables de retracer nos sentiments intérieurs. Donc nous avons utilisé l'environnement musical (notre ami musicien Richie qui partage avec nous nos influences, les idées et la structure de notre projet), note musique folk et un mélange de voix comme à l'opéra. Au travers du temps, le groupe a changé plusieurs fois de line-up au niveau de la batterie, de la basse et des guitares, pour plusieurs raisons. Aurora, Richie et moi avons passé beaucoup de temps à chercher des musiciens qui se trouvaient dans la même lignée musicale que nous, afin d'avoir le meilleur son pour notre musique. Au début de 2005, j'ai rencontré Oscar Martin, plus connu sous le nom de "Yito" et il est devenu le nouveau guitariste du groupe au bout d'un an. Au même moment (Janvier 2006), nous avons rencontré notre nouveau bassiste, Eddy Geott. Enfin, en Mars 2006, Gabriel Mella a rejoint le groupe en tant que batteur. Le groupe était enfin au complet avec les musiciens que nous attendions et le son que nous avions vraiment en tête depuis le début. De cela, est donc né Yawarhiem formé de : Aurora D' Nina(chant), J. Miguel Brendal (chant et flûtes), Richie Salverredy (clavier), Oscar Martin “Yito” (guitare), Eddie Geott (basse) & Gabriel Mella (batterie). Nous travaillons toujours pour enregistrer l'album.
2. Qui a eu l'idée de nommer le groupe Yawarhiem? Qu'est ce que cela signifie par rapport à votre musique?
Aurora et moi avons choisi ce nom ; YAWARHIEM a deux sens profonds qui sont intrinsèquement reliés aux émotions musicales et aux sensations du chant. Avec ce nom, nous voulions retrouver une culture de nos ancêtres (YAWAR signifie le sang en "quechua") et du langage universel (HIEM signifie l'hiver en latin). Ce mélange représente le concept global de notre musique et transmet au monde tout ce qui concerne l'empire Inca au travers de la mythologie. Je dois dire que Yawarhiem est un seul mot car nous l'avons adopté dans la saga comme un dieu de l'histoire, qui représente le dieu Soleil. On prononce Yawarhiem, "Yawariem", le "h" étant muet.
3. Quand j'écoute Yawarhiem, j'entends des mélodies de metal de l'Europe du Nord et du Folk péruvien. Quelles sont vos influences?
Oui, nous avons beaucoup d'influences, comme Gamma Ray, Helloween, Iron Maiden, ..etc. L'opéra, le rock, le blues, des musiques de film, et du folk péruvien sont autant de styles qui caractérisent notre musique.
4. Avez-vous un message personnel au travers de votre musique? Par exemple, un message politique.
L'histoire de notre musique est basée sur la mythologie Inca, sur les frères Ayar et la construction de l'empire. Les chansons parlent de plusieurs sentiments humains : la haine, l'amour, la vengeance, la confiance...etc. Bref, tous ces sentiments qui sont dans le monde au fil du temps.
5. Où en sont vos expériences d'enregistrement et de production?
Nous avons enregistré les sessions à la fin des années 2006; ça a pris beaucoup de temps à cause des budgets de location du studio. Nous venons de terminer l'album après son mastering en Argentine. Pour notre premier album, on a décidé d'utiliser beaucoup d'instruments particuliers afin de compléter l'idée de la démo et apporter un nouveau son. Donc, nous avons utilisé une batterie, des guitares, une basse et un clavier comme principal atout au sein des arrangements orchestraux ; nous avons aussi une session spéciale pour les chœurs, composée de quatre voix masculines entre le ténor et le bariton, et trois voix féminines mi-soprano ; les instruments à vent péruviens (quenas, quenachos, zampoñas, antaras) et les instruments plus conventionnels comme la flûte traversière et des instruments nordiques, la flûte irlandaise, le charango qui est un instrument à corde péruvien, et enfin, nous avons enregistré quelques instruments ancestraux à percussion, qui s’appellent le sikuri et le palo de Lluvia. En conclusion, l’expérience était formidable, car nous avons pu apporter nos idées personnelles. Nous utilisons autant que possible tous les instruments dont nous avons besoin.
6. Avez-vous des projets pour l’avenir concernant l’enregistrement de votre album ?
Oui, ici au Pérou, c’est un peu difficile à cause du marché ; il n’existe pas de label pour le style que nous pratiquons et nous sommes obligés de travailler en indépendant, ce qui est vraiment compliqué. Aujourd’hui, pour enregistrer notre album, nous cherchons un label qui pourrait être intéressé à travers le monde entier. Aurora est actuellement en Allemagne à la recherche d’un label, donc nous espérons en trouver un.
7. Quels autres projets avez-vous?
La pré-production de notre second album est prête. Donc, nous projetons de l’enregistrer aussi tôt que possible. Avant cela, nous enregistrons notre premier album qui s’appelle « The Rebirth Of Empire ».
8. Avez-vous des commentaires ou des opinions à propos de la scène metal locale et son développement ?
La scène locale au Pérou est fantastique, les gens nous soutiennent vraiment. Nous avons joué dans de nombreux festivals ici, les gens en sont fous, mais objectivement, le soutien pour cette musique n’est pas suffisant. Comme vous savez, l’Amérique latine est un endroit tropical, donc la plupart des gens profitent de cela. Il y a ici de grands groupes de Heavy mais le plus célèbre groupe péruvien fait un metal extrême, Death, Black, Thrash.
9. On vous voit prochainement en Europe ?
Oui, je l’espère vraiment.
10. Quelle est votre opinion à propos du téléchargement et du fait de partager sa musique?
Hum, en fait j’ai deux points de vue. D’une part, je trouve cela super d’avoir accès au monde entier, internet permet d’obtenir ce que l’on veut. Dans le but de se faire connaître, c’est plutôt bien. Mais pour l’industrie du disque et pour les groupes indépendants qui doivent investir leurs deniers personnels pour produire leur propre album, ce n’est pas aussi génial. Mais bon, c’est l’évolution et vos chansons se retrouvent au beau milieu d’un ipod avec des milliers de groupes, de styles…
11. Y a-t-il d’autres nouvelles que vous voudriez faire partager à votre public ?
OUI !!! Nous sommes à la recherche d’un label pour enregistrer notre album “The Rebirth Of The Empire” qui contient 11 pistes et 4 chapitres et qui est super ; nous l’avons fait avec beaucoup d’amour et de passion. Et depuis début Janvier, on peut trouver notre premier clip vidéo qui a été enregistré l’année dernière. J’espère que vous l’apprécierez ; nous l’avons tourné dans de nombreux lieux naturels et culturels péruviens.

ENGLISH VERSION 1. Tell us about the origins of Yawarhiem - how long has the band been in existence and what led to the current line-up that you will have at your CD launch?
The early stage of Yawarhiem was in mid 2004.
Few years ago Aurora, Richie and me (J. Miguel) had a progressive- neoclassical metal band called Hiemis Animi, that we decided end it up, because we want to develop a new and different musical project.
Right after that, Aurora and I take some time to create the near structure of the ideas that were rounding our heads. We clearly decided change our old concept and get into a innovating style that we had in minds, in order to create through our music a world of mystic and intense sceneries capable to touch inner feelings. So, our conclusion was to use the orchestral environment (here was called our musician friend Richie who share with us influences, the idea and structure of the project), our folk music and mix our voices as operatic storytellers-singers of the saga history.
Through the time the band had several musician changes in drums, bass and guitar, for different reasons. Aurora, Richie and I spent many time in the hard searching of new musicians that could have the same musical direction as well, so that time was the best opportunity to find “ the real the sound” that we had in mind
At the beginning of 2005 I met to Oscar Martin, most known as “Yito” and after a year he was the new guitar player of the band. At the same time (in January 2006) we get a new bass player too called Eddy Geott, to whom I met in a friends jammin session where we used to play covers from Rainbow, Artension, Angra, Sonata Artica, etc. Finally in march 2006, found to Gabriel Mella, a right replacement of our old drums (Christian Saavedra). In that way, finally the band was totally completed with the musicians we’ve been looking for and with the sound that we really had in our minds from the very beginning of the project.
And from there on, YAWARHIEM was formed by: Aurora D' Nina(vocals), J. Miguel Brendal (vocals and winds), Richie Salverredy (keyboards), Oscar Martin “Yito” (guitar), Eddie Geott (bass) & Gabriel Mella (drums), with whom we are still working, and recorded the album.
2. Who came up with the name Yawarhiem? What exactly does it mean in relation to your music?
Aurora and Me decided the name, YAWARHIEM” came from two deep figurative meanings that are intrinsically related with the musical emotions and sensations of the saga lyrics. With the name Yawarhiem, want to recover a cultural sense of our ancestor’s language (Yawar = means blood in quechua) and the universal language (Hiem = means winter in latin) too. This mix represents the global concept of our musical and seague intention that is to transmit to the world all about the Inka Empire using mythologyc characters based on Inka’s chronicles.
I must say, that Yawarhiem is one word, because we adopted it in the saga as a god of the story, that represents the sun god.
Yawarhiem must be read “Yawariem”, for these languages the “H” is mute.
3. When I hear Yawarhiem, I can hear some european nordic melodic metal
influence and Peruvian folk. What do you class as influences for you?
Yes, We have a lot of influences, Bands of metal like, Gamma ray, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Etc. Opera, Rock, Blues, Sountracks of movies ,and Peruvian folk Music, Thats why our music has that characteristics.
4. Do you have a personal meaning or connection from making music? For example spreading political message.
The story of our songs is based on Inca s Mythology, about the Ayar brothers and the build of the empire. The lyrics talk about many feelings of mankind, revealing the hate, love, vengeance, faith, etc, feelings that still in the world against the time.
5. How were your experiences of recording and producing?
Well, we started the recording sessions at the end of 2006; it takes a lot of time because of the budget to rent the studio. Just this week the album is completely ready, after being mastered in Argentina.
For this, our first album, we decided to use many particular instruments to complete the idea of the demo, and improve the sound too. So, we apart of the usual instruments as Drums, guitars, and bass guitar, used the keyboard as a principal complement to make the orchestral arrangements, we also, had an especial session to record the choirs composed by four males voices between low, tenors and baritones, and three female lyric voices between sopranos and mezzo, the folk wind Peruvian instruments (quenas, quenachos, zampoñas, antaras) and conventional wind like the traverse flute and a Nordic wind instrument, the irland flute , the charango which is a string Peruvian instrument, and finally we recorded some ancestral percusion instruments, which is called sikuri and palo de lluvia.
In conclusion the experience was great, because we can complete the songs as the original main idea. We used as possible we can, all the instruments we needed.
6. Do you have any plans at the moment to follow up the release of your album ?
Yes, Here in Perú, is a little difficult, because of the market, for the style we made doesn’t exist records label to support, so we are being working as an independent way, which is really hard. Now, to release the album, we are looking for a label that would be interested around the world, Aurora is now in Germany looking about that, so we ll hope get something there.
7. What other plans do you have for the future?
We have the pre production of the second album ready. So, we are planning to record it as soon as possible.
Before that, we plan release the album, our first album Wich is called The Rebirth of the Empire.
8. Do you have any comments or opinions on the local metal scene and its development?
The metal scene here in Perú, is fantastic, people really support us. We played in many festivals here, that people really enjoy, but obviously the support for this music is not enough. As you know latin America is a tropical place, so the most support goes for that ways. Here are great Heavy metal bands, but the most popular Peruvian bands in the world, make an extreme metal, Death, black, trash.
9. We will see you in Europe soon?
Yeah, jaja I hope so.
10. What are your opinions about downloading and 'sharing' music?
Well, I have two points of view. One, is great because, you have access to all the world, the internet is a power door to get whatever, In order to make known is good. But, for the music industry and more for the independent bands, that have to invest to produce their own album, is not so funny. But well, that’s the evolution, finally your songs end mixed in an ipod with thousand of bands, styles and whatever.
11. Is there new or additional news/info you would like to make the public aware of?
Yes!!!!, We are looking for a label to release the album that will called The rebirth of the empire and has eleven tracks, four chapters, and which is great and we made it with a lot of love and passion J. And the first week of January will be on the net our first video clip that was recorded the last year. I hope you can enjoy it; we make the video in many natural and cultural places of our Peruvian culture.
